What to do if your child has a dental emergency

If your child has a dental injury or severe pain, acting quickly is important. The sooner you bring them to our kid-friendly emergency dentist, the more we can help!

For a broken, cracked, or chipped tooth:

  • Keep the tooth moist at all times. If it’s a baby tooth, try placing it in a glass of milk or water.
  • To lessen swelling, hold a cold compress against your child’s cheek near the broken tooth.

If your child has a toothache:

  • Don’t put any painkillers directly on the gums; this can hurt the gum tissue.
  • Rinse their mouth with warm water to clean it out.
  • Use dental floss to gently remove any food caught between their teeth.
  • Rinse again, this time with a saltwater solution (1/2 teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water).
  • Apply a warm compress to your child’s cheek to help relieve pain.

Even if the pain seems to go away, there could still be an underlying issue. If your child has any of these symptoms, please call us now at (513) 770-1450. We’re ready to make your child smile again!

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as a dental emergency for kids?

If your child has a toothache, trouble when eating or talking, a loose or broken tooth, or if their gums won’t stop bleeding and are swollen, it’s time to call us. We’re here to help figure out if it’s an emergency.

How can I tell if my child has a tooth infection?

Look out for these signs:

  • A toothache that doesn’t go away
  • Teeth that are extra sensitive to hot or cold
  • Gums or jaw that hurt or feel tender

Does my child's tooth need to be pulled?

Not all tooth problems mean your child’s tooth must come out. We’ll check carefully and see if we can fix it with a simpler treatment like a filling or a crown. If the tooth needs to be pulled, we’ll ensure you and your child know exactly what to expect.

Will my child's toothache just go away?

Sometimes a toothache might stop hurting for a bit, but that doesn’t mean the problem is gone. It’s important to get it checked out right away to stop more serious problems later.

What should I do if my child loses a tooth?

If the tooth is still whole, pick it up by the top part (not the root), rinse it under water, and put it back in place if you can. Then call us right away. The quicker you act, the better chance we have to save the tooth.
